According to a report by Punch on Saturday, May 3, 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to be honest and direct in his dealings with President Bola Tinubu, particularly regarding the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.
Wike made this call in a statement issued on Saturday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
Wike advised Fubara to clearly communicate his demands to the President rather than sending conflicting signals.
He criticized the governor’s approach to the crisis, saying that those who genuinely desire peace must act accordingly and not engage in actions that contradict their public appeals for reconciliation.
“It is not enough to be visiting people to plead for peace; those who genuinely want peace must work and act for it. These are the same people pleading for peace, yet doing things contrary to their words,” Wike said.
The minister was reacting to an incident that occurred during an empowerment programme hosted by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in Port Harcourt.
A group of women reportedly loyal to Fubara walked out of the event, which was organised under the Renewed Hope Initiative and held at the EUI Centre in GRA, Port Harcourt.
Wike described the walkout, led by some sacked local government vice-chairmen allied with Fubara, as a “show of shame” and a direct insult to the offices of the President and First Lady.
He alleged that the incident was sponsored by the governor and expressed disappointment over what he termed as political antics that only deepen the crisis in the state.
“How can you claim to want peace and at the same time sponsor people to insult everyone, including the President and his wife? All these shenanigans will not bring peace, and I am sure they know that — because they are not sincere in their back-and-forth calls for peace,” he said.
Wike also tendered an unreserved apology to President Tinubu and the First Lady on behalf of the people of Rivers State.
He reiterated that the actions of a few individuals at the event did not reflect the values and character of the majority of Rivers residents.
