In a recent video on YouTube, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s eligibility for a second term will be determined solely by his performance in office and not through the manipulation of political power. This was stated during his address following a public lecture at the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution in Abuja.

Dogara highlighted that Tinubu’s administration has already displayed a degree of courage in initiating critical economic reforms. He noted that the success or failure of those reforms would ultimately shape public opinion and determine the president’s political future.

According to Dogara, the country needs a leadership that earns its mandate through impactful governance rather than coercive control. He maintained that Nigerians would make informed decisions based on the tangible results of the president’s policies—particularly in areas such as food security and economic relief.

The former speaker expressed hope that, over time, citizens would begin to witness improvements in their standard of living. He believes that if Tinubu continues to demonstrate bold leadership, especially in implementing difficult but necessary reforms, the electorate will reward him with continued support.

Dogara concluded by reaffirming his belief in the importance of principled governance and democratic accountability, asserting that true legitimacy comes from service delivery and not the use of state power for personal political gain.

According to him, “I want a situation where the president can win by the power of his example, not by the example of his power — to say that ‘I’m forcing myself because I have my hands on the levers of the coercive apparatus of the state.’ No. But he should win on account that he has done very well and that a lot of people in this country support him. I think he has the opportunity because some of the reforms he has initiated will take courage, and he has demonstrated that courage.”

“So, we want to see the fruits. I believe that by the time Nigerians begin to see the fruits — suffering easing, food becoming more abundant on their tables — they will be able to come to a judgment as to what they need to do in terms of support. But overall, I’m happy because of the courage the president has shown.
