Hakeem Baba Ahmed, former Special Adviser to President Tinubu, said a large number of northern Christians supported Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election because they were not happy with the APC’s decision to choose both a Muslim presidential candidate (Tinubu) and a Muslim running mate (Shettima).
Speaking in a video shared by Channels TV from 43:44, Baba Ahmed stated that Peter Obi received about six million votes, and many of them came from northern Christians who were uncomfortable with the Muslim-Muslim ticket. He also said the North has now become more aware and careful about politicians who try to divide people using religion or ethnicity.
In Baba Ahmed’s words: “Tinubu comes up with Muslim-Muslim ticket, Northern Christians said ‘Ok, we will have our own candidate’ and they did. Peter Obi got 6 million votes, a huge part of that came from the north and it is mostly about ‘we can’t have a ticket that has two Muslims on it’. I think that the north is more sensitive to that now”
