A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dele Momodu, has stated that any southerner planning to contest against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election would merely be wasting their time.

During an interview with Arise TV, he stated that Tinubu can only be effectively challenged by a candidate from the North. He noted that if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or any political coalition aims to regain power, their best chance lies in presenting a northern candidate.

While he mentioned hearing that a Yoruba individual, specifically Governor Seyi Makinde, whom he personally likes, might be interested in contesting, he stated that such a candidacy is unrealistic and unlikely to succeed.

He said, “Tinubu can only be countered this time by a northerner, any southerner telling you ‘I want to contest against Tinubu’ is simply wasting his time. The PDP or the coalition also wants power, and the only way they can get power is to come from the opposite direction. Who will be the person, I don’t know. I hear some Yoruba person say he wants to contest, he is a guy I like, Governor Seyi Makinde, but I know that at the end of the day, that cannot happen. It cannot happen.”
