In a dramatic twist that could send political shockwaves across Nigeria, multiple powerful U.S. government agencies are preparing to release secret documents allegedly tying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a controversial drug investigation. According to report from Daily Trust, the long awaited release is set for this Friday May 2, following a strict court directive in the United States.
Among the top agencies involved are the FBI, DEA, IRS, the U.S. State Department, and several federal prosecutors’ offices. These institutions have all been ordered by a U.S. District Court to submit and release investigative records linked to Tinubu and others connected to a suspected drug network dating back to the 1990s.
This move follows a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by American transparency advocate Aaron Greenspan. Between 2022 and 2023, Greenspan sent 12 different document requests targeting six U.S. agencies. He demanded full access to files on Bola Tinubu and several associates, including Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Akande, and Abiodun Agbele names allegedly tied to a historic drug trafficking probe.
The federal judge, Beryl Howell, ruled in April that the agencies’ reasons for blocking the information were weak and “not credible.” She gave them until May 2 to produce the documents, excluding the CIA, which was given separate instructions.
Despite the buzz surrounding the case, Nigeria’s Presidency has waved off the entire saga as “old news.” Officials claim that the files contain nothing new and won’t implicate President Tinubu in any criminal acts. Meanwhile, legal experts note that although the documents are expected soon, the U.S. agencies still have a slim window to appeal the court order.
As the countdown begins, both supporters and critics are watching closely. Will this release rewrite the political narrative or end as another dead end scandal? All eyes are on Friday.
