Prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and media mogul, Chief Dele Momodu, has stirred political discourse with a recent claim implicating Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, in the exit of Peter Obi from the PDP ahead of the 2023 elections.
In a report by Vanguard Newspaper, Momodu alleged that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had been open to the idea of the PDP zoning its presidential ticket to the Southeast. According to him, Atiku expressed readiness to support a Southeastern candidate if the party agreed to shift power to the region. However, that plan was allegedly sabotaged from within the party.
Momodu pointed fingers at Wike, claiming the former Rivers State governor played a key role in blocking the Southeastern agenda. He accused Wike of rejecting any association with the Southeast, thereby weakening the push for a Southeastern presidential candidate and contributing to Peter Obi’s eventual defection to the Labour Party.
Referencing the internal dynamics, Momodu concluded, “[Atiku] wanted them to cede power to the southeast. But because Wike had already disqualified himself by saying he’s not an Igbo man, he said he’s from south-south, he’s not interested in Igbo anything, so he succeeded in frustrating Peter Obi out of the party.”
