Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Usman Yusuf, has stated that during his time in office, he controlled more money than most governors. Yusuf said that if he had wanted to steal money, he had the opportunity, but he chose not to.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Arise TV, Yusuf said that when he first arrived at the NHIS, nobody could give him a clear answer about how much money the agency actually had. Yusuf said he decided to bring in an independent financial firm to audit all NHIS accounts and find out the truth.

Yusuf said the audit report showed that over 13 commercial banks were holding NHIS funds illegally. He stated that more than 100 billion naira was sitting in these banks without proper records. Yusuf said he compiled all the findings into a report and made sure to hand it over to the appropriate government officials.

In Yusuf’s words: “People don’t know, Nigerians don’t know I was in control of more money in the NHIS at that time, real solid cool hard cash than most governors. If I wanted to steal money I would have done that. My fight in the NHIS was public at that time. When I came to the NHIS nobody could tell me how much more money NHIS had”
