The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the defection of Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a betrayal lacking integrity and justification.

Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Ibrahim Abdullahi, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, called the defection “one of the most painful decisions taken by any governor in Nigeria’s history,” criticising the governor’s character and questioning the rationale behind his switch despite Delta being a “robust” and stable state under PDP leadership.

At some point during the interview, Abdullahi stated that “the defection is not surprising when you have people that are spineless and devoid of character. This is one of the most painful decisions taken by any governor in Nigerian history. You have a state that is robust. One that we were proud of, and we don’t think there is enough of a problem in your state to warrant this decision. The argument some of us made was that Okowa was not the most suitable person to be anointed by Atiku Abubakar, and that is the ground that I still maintain.”

He went on to state that “I came here and I spoke in different fora, arguing that Okowa was the wrong choice PDP made in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election. Because even the committee that constituted recommended Wike. 14 out of 18 of them went with Wike. The second person would have been Udom Emmanuel if you’re speaking about a gentleman with demeanour and performance. If you’re talking about competence, brand and capacity, Wike would stand out.
