According to Vanguard, Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed a deep desire to alleviate human suffering and foster peace and stability, both in Nigeria and around the world.

Speaking at a reception held in his honor in Abuja, Jonathan reflected on the emotional weight he carries when he sees people struggling, and emphasized his unwavering commitment to peace.

The event was organized by his friends and associates to celebrate the Sunhak Peace Prize, which he recently received from the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation in South Korea.

The prestigious award, founded by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon—the wife of the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon—is intended to support global efforts to eradicate suffering, resolve conflicts, reduce poverty, and protect the environment.

It promotes a comprehensive and future-focused vision of peace.

Jonathan was recognized for his role in fostering democracy and promoting peaceful transitions of power during and after his tenure as Nigeria’s leader.

In his address at the Abuja gathering, Jonathan acknowledged the suffering he regularly witnesses and how it personally affects him.

“I wish I could end the suffering of people that I come across daily. I do not really want to see human beings suffering and I would be happy to give a helping hand to them if I had the means and be in a position to do so,” he said, conveying both empathy and a sense of helplessness in the face of widespread hardship.

His remarks struck a chord with those in attendance, particularly when he reaffirmed his lifelong dedication to peace.

“Indeed, I always feel bad seeing people suffering. But let me assure you all seated here today, that my commitment to peace remains unchanged till I die. I will continue to seek peace and pursue it for as long as I am alive,” he said, drawing resounding applause from the audience, which included close allies, supporters, and members of civil society.

Jonathan also took the opportunity to express gratitude to Robert Azibaola, a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, who organized the event in his honor.

He praised Azibaola for bringing together so many well-wishers to celebrate his recognition in Seoul, calling the gesture thoughtful and deeply appreciated.

Throughout his speech, Jonathan emphasized the importance of peace as a foundation for development and prosperity, and reaffirmed that it is a cause he will continue to champion.

He suggested that true leadership is not measured solely by power or political achievement, but by the ability to impact lives positively and promote harmony within society.

The former president’s heartfelt reflections highlighted the essence of the Sunhak Peace Prize and the ideals it seeks to promote.

His words served as a reminder of the importance of compassion, service, and global cooperation in the pursuit of a more peaceful and equitable world.
