Former Nigerian Military Force Commander in Plateau State, General Anthony Atolagbe, has revealed how a dropped mobile phone became the crucial piece of evidence that led to the capture of attackers following a deadly communal clash in Plateau state.

In an interview with Channels TV, Atolagbe described the sequence of retaliatory violence that prompted his intervention: “There was one of the incidents in which a group killed on this side, then the other people went after the other one. And when they were not going to stop, I started picking people.”

The general explained that he deployed specialized tracking equipment that wasn’t officially allocated to his command to help identify the perpetrators. The breakthrough came following a violent incident when they discovered a key piece of evidence. “The phone of one of the attackers fell, so we picked the phone, and then we tracked him,” Atolagbe explained. “Then from him, we were able to get three other persons, making four.”

Following protocol, Gen. Atolagbe immediately reported the arrests to higher authorities: “Straight away we reported to the higher command, and I was told to transfer them. I told them they were already on their way to Abuja, and that’s what happened.”
