In an interview via MIC on Podcast From 42:40, PDP chieftain Segun Sowunmi passionately advocated for a Southeast presidency, emphasizing that it is long overdue, especially considering the historical roots of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He reminded listeners that the party itself was born from the efforts of Southeast leaders like Dr. Alex Ekwueme, stressing that justice and equity demand that the region be given a fair shot at the presidency. Sowunmi suggests that Peter Obi, as a respected figure from the region, stands a real chance if he returns to the PDP and contests.
Sowunmi also highlighted Obi’s past political performance, noting how he garnered over six million votes in the 2023 election without the backing of any state governor or strong grassroots infrastructure. He emphasized that with the proper support system—such as control over a major party platform like the PDP and endorsements from party governors—Peter Obi’s potential could significantly multiply. The combination of credibility, sympathy for the Southeast, and organizational strength could make him a formidable force in 2027.
Furthermore, Sowunmi argued that with the right alliances, Peter Obi could sweep several regions across the country, including the South East, South South, North Central, and parts of the Christian North. He believes that if Obi’s supporters follow him into the PDP, the party would have a broader, more enthusiastic base to mobilize, even before the official campaign begins. He painted a vision where Obi’s candidacy becomes a unifying and energizing force across zones.
In his words;
“If I were him I’d make a strong stake for the ticket because I really do not see why the Igbos… This party was actually conceived in the bedroom of Alex Ekwueme. I really do not see why the Igbos and the Southern Leaders and other Leaders cannot say we accept, we owe the South East, here’s the ticket. If Peter can do 6 point something by himself, no Governor, no nothing. Can you imagine what he would do with 12 Governors and a strong grassroots infrastructure? If Peter Obi goes to the PDP, he will likely get the ticket. If his followings were to follow him into the PDP and he’s the Presidential Candidate, I can guarantee you, Peter will take the South East, the South South, the Christian North, the North Central. Do you know how many votes we can bring for him without even campaigning?”
