In a recent statement via his official X account, Chidi Odinkalu, a law professor and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, has criticized Bishop David Abioye over a recent statement about tithing.

Bishop Abioye had said that tithes are not received by pastors but by Jesus.

“It is not the pastor who receives your tithes; it is Jesus who receives your tithe. What will the pastor do with your tithes? Your tithes are meant to tie you to God,” he said.

Odinkalu reacted strongly to this and questioned the logic of the statement.

“How do people even allow themselves to listen to this kind of nonsense – that God needs paper money which is of very recent origin in human society?!” Odinkalu wrote.

Many supported him, stating that religious leaders should not mislead their followers.

Odinkalu is known for speaking out on social and human rights issues.

This time, he focused on the way some pastors talk about money and giving in churches.

His comment has opened another debate about tithing in Nigeria, some people say tithing is a personal act of faith.
