Amid the ongoing political tension in Rivers State, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he is open to reconciling with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, but only if his estranged political protégé seeks forgiveness sincerely.

Wike, who governed Rivers State from 2015 to 2023, made this known during a media parley in Abuja on Friday.

According to Channels Television, the rift between Wike and Fubara has been at the heart of the deepening crisis in the state, stemming from a fierce struggle over political control and state resources.

When asked directly if he would forgive Fubara should the governor request it, Wike responded affirmatively.

“Sincerely,” he said, noting that genuine remorse is the only condition for reconciliation.

During an interview on Channels Television on Friday morning, he further disclosed that two unnamed governors have approached him in a bid to mediate the dispute.

“These two governors came to me and I said, ‘Look, I am here for peace.

What does he want?’ They said, ‘We will do everything,’” Wike recounted.

The crisis has already shaken the state’s political structure, with 27 lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), deepening the divide.

Wike also reiterated his support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers, following Fubara’s suspension along with his deputy and the lawmakers.

He admitted he had initially wanted Fubara removed outright but acknowledged that Tinubu’s intervention averted further chaos.

“As a politician, I am not happy with the emergency declaration, but the President’s move prevented anarchy.

My role isn’t to make the governor comfortable,” Wike said.

The matter is now before the court, but political tensions remain high as the state awaits further developments.
