During a lively celebration for his 54th birthday on April 12, 2025, in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, widely recognized as Tompolo, drew attention with his comments regarding the political landscape of Rivers State.

The former militant leader, now a peace advocate, spoke to a gathering of Ijaw leaders and community members, highlighting his strong connections with Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

“Throughout the entirety of the Ijaw Nation, I consider Wike to be my friend,” Tompolo stated, acknowledging Wike’s contribution to the rise of Siminalayi Fubara to the position of governor. He remarked, “When this boy Fubara was appointed to the position of governor, there was no Ijaw representation present,” emphasizing a concern regarding the involvement of the Ijaw community in Fubara’s ascent.

The event, rich in Ijaw cultural traditions, highlighted Tompolo’s lasting impact within the Ijaw community, one of the 23 ethnic groups in Rivers State, which has historically faced challenges related to political representation. Tompolo asserted that the backing of the Ijaw community played a crucial role in Wike’s rise to power, highlighting the intricate political dynamics of the region.

In light of the current situation regarding the Wike-Fubara disagreement, which commenced in 2023 concerning the governance of Rivers State’s political framework, Tompolo conveyed his assurance in Fubara’s eventual reinstatement, remarking, “Our son Siminalayi Fubara will return and sit on the throne.”
