Abubakar Shehu, one of the hunters who escaped being killed by a mob in Uromi, said he never expected to survive the attack. He said the money found on them was not from any criminal activity, as some people claimed.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Pidgin, Shehu said hunters are known to work hard and make a living through their hunting jobs. He said some hunters send their money home while others carry it with them while traveling back home to buy things for their families when they return. He said the money seen with them belonged to some of the hunters who hadn’t yet sent theirs home.

Shehu also said that hunters always move around with their tools which include iron traps and locally made guns. Shehu added that their guns were not illegal, as they had licenses for them.

In Shehu’s words: “At that moment even I didn’t think I would survive. As for that money, you see people know that hunters always go out to hustle (make a living). Some send their earnings back home, while others keep their money to buy things for their families along the way. Our tools are iron traps and locally made guns. As you know, hunters always carry guns, but ours are licensed.
