Political observers have claimed that the defection of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) may have been influenced by the return of his long-time political rivals to the APC.

According to The Sun, it was reported that El-Rufai had previously engaged in political battles with figures such as Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, Shehu Sani, and others who were once members of the APC. Following conflicts with El-Rufai, Hunkuyi had left the APC for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), while Shehu Sani had defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

However, less than 24 hours after Shehu Sani publicly declared his support for Governor Uba Sani’s reelection bid, El-Rufai, reportedly out of concern for his political future, officially left the APC for the SDP.

Sources indicated that the return of Shehu Sani and other prominent politicians in Kaduna, including Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, Senator Danjuma Laah, and former governor Ramalan Yero, had created further uncertainty for El-Rufai within the party.

Shehu Sani had stated that his primary political goal for 2027 was to ensure the reelection of Governor Uba Sani in Kaduna State.

Unwilling to remain in the APC under these circumstances, El-Rufai formally announced his resignation from the party in a Facebook post on Monday.

Meanwhile, in a reaction via telephone call, Shehu Sani said, “El-rufai leaving the All Progressives Congress for SDP would not make any difference for someone with no political relevance again. But one thing is sure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani will be voted again.”
