Nigerian filmmaker Obi Emelonye has shared details about his meeting with former military leader Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB). He disclosed that someone arranged for him to visit IBB’s house, but he was warned at the door that he had only five minutes to speak with him.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Jideonwo Chude on his popular show #WithChude, Emelonye said that when he entered and sat down, IBB looked at him and immediately identified him as an Igbo man. He said he reminded IBB that they had met before in 1990 at the State House in Marina, Lagos. He said he explained that it was during the Nigeria National Youth Award, where he was among 70 young Nigerians who received an award from IBB.

Emelonye said that he came prepared with photos from that event, and when he showed them to IBB, his face lit up. He said IBB even started calling the names of people in the pictures. He said what was supposed to be a brief five-minute conversation ended up lasting for two hours because IBB was so welcoming.

In Emelonye’s words: “I said I have met you before and he said where. I told him in 1990 at State House Marina, Lagos. He said what was the occasion and I said during Nigeria National Youth Award I was part of 70 young Nigerians that you gave an award to and I came prepared. I brought out my photos, his face lit up and he started calling names of people in the photos. My 5 minutes turned into 2 hours”
