The political crisis in Rivers State has persisted for months, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara facing impeachment threats, however, various factors might help him remain in office, according to Vanguard.

The crisis started in October 2023 when state lawmakers attempted to remove Fubara, these legislators, who are connected with former Governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, have consistently challenged Fubara’s authority.

Despite this, the governor has stood firm, securing support from different political figures and groups.

For impeachment to proceed, the state’s Chief Judge must set up a panel to review the allegations against Fubara.

Justice Simeon Amadi, known for his integrity, is widely believed to be unwilling to aid the lawmakers’ efforts, posing a significant obstacle to their plans.

Moreover, influential groups like the Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF) and the Ijaw National Congress (INC) have strongly opposed any move to remove Fubara.

They argue that his impeachment could destabilize both Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region.

Despite criticism of his leadership, Fubara has gained solid backing from ethnic and regional leaders, particularly within the Ijaw community.

Many see his struggle as part of a larger fight for their political future and have pledged to defend him against removal attempts.

Additionally, several government officials and political allies continue to stand by Fubara, believing he should serve out his term.

Even though the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of lawmakers loyal to Wike, Fubara’s supporters remain determined.

While the governor has managed to retain power, challenges persist.

The state Assembly has issued ultimatums, insisting he submit the 2025 budget and reappoint commissioners with their approval.

These moves indicate that lawmakers are still determined to undermine his administration.

Nonetheless, if Fubara maintains his resistance and strengthens his alliances, he may ultimately withstand this political crisis.
