The Federal Government has intervened in the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as pressure mounts from women’s rights groups threatening large-scale demonstrations, Dailypost reports. Activists argue that her suspension is not only a political issue but also an attack on gender representation and democratic values.
Minister of Women Affairs Iman Suleiman-Ibrahim confirmed that the government would hold discussions with key stakeholders to seek a resolution that balances justice with fairness. The senator’s suspension, which is set to last six months, followed her petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. The petition was dismissed on procedural grounds, and the Senate’s ethics committee recommended her suspension, citing misconduct and actions that allegedly undermined the institution’s reputation.
Outraged by the decision, women’s advocacy groups, including the Coalition for Women in Governance and Women in Management, Business, and Public Service, have vowed to stage protests unless the suspension is overturned. Zainab Mohammed, a leading voice in the movement, called for Natasha’s reinstatement, emphasizing that legislative bodies must uphold the rule of law rather than silence dissenting voices.
Meanwhile, over 13,000 individuals have signed a petition demanding Senate President Akpabio step down until an independent investigation is conducted.
