Peter Ameh, the National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, addressed the controversy surrounding the Rivers State House of Assembly crisis in an interview with Channels Television FROM 3:44. He emphasized the principle of legislative majority, arguing that the remaining members in a legislative body, regardless of their numbers, form the majority if others have defected or left their positions.
He suggested that if a significant number of lawmakers defect from their party, those who remain legally constitute the majority, even if they are fewer in number. His argument aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which recognized the Martins Amaewhule-led faction as the legitimate legislative body despite the reduced number of active members.
In his words;
“Before the Supreme Court Judgement, people talk about four Assembly people taking law. You take from the available. The available become the majority. If people have defected from their party and there are four people remaining as the bonafide members, you take the majority from them.”
