A dramatic session unfolded in the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan clashed with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over her attempt to present a petition on allegations of sexual harassment, abuse of office, and obstruction of legislative duties.

The heated exchange began when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, stood to introduce her petition. However, her attempt was met with resistance as procedural debates ensued.

In a video posted by TVC News, she said; “I am Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing the good and virtuous people of Kogi Central. I beg to differ on the claim that this matter is sub judice. I stand on Order 10 (Privileges), which protects my right to speak. Mr. Senate President, with due respect, I have raised a point of privilege under Order 10.”

At this point, murmurs filled the chamber as some senators voiced their disapproval, while others called for order. The Senate President attempted to move on but Akpoti-Uduaghan remained firm.

Amid interruptions and apparent attempts to mute her microphone, the senator strongly objected, demanding her right to be heard.

She forcefully replied, “Kindly allow me to speak without interruption. Please stop turning off my microphone. I represent people, including women who have been silenced.”

Despite her insistence, Akpabio refused to accept the petition, further escalating tensions in the chamber. He dismissed the allegations outright, maintaining his innocence.

“At no time did I attempt or commit any act of sexual harassment against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan or any other woman,” Akpabio stated. “I was raised by a single mother and have always respected women.”
