Dr. Suleiman Suleiman, Executive Director of the Institute of Public Communication, Abuja, has shared his thoughts on the closure of some schools in the North during Ramadan. He said that fasting during Ramadan is only obligatory for Muslims, but not all students in these schools are Muslim.
Speaking in an interview with Daily Trust TV, Suleiman said that in states like Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Bauchi, most students are Muslim, but there are also Christian students who attend these schools. He explained that shutting down schools for a whole month because of Ramadan would not only affect Muslim students but also those who do not follow the religion.
Suleiman stated that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was justified in speaking up about the issue, as the decision to close schools for Ramadan could disrupt education for students who are not part of the observance.
In Suleiman’s words: “Ramadan Fast is obligatory only on Muslims but not only Muslim children attend school even in Kano, Katsina, Kebbi and Bauchi State. Of course the predominant number of children in those states who are in school or out of school are predominantly Muslims, but they are not the only ones who are in school. There are also Christian students who are in school so if you are saying there should be no school for one month then it means that it will affect other people who do not following this particular religion. So I think CAN, the Christian Association of Nigeria, are justified to raise a voice”
