Senator Cyril Fasuyi of Ekiti North Senatorial District has ignited the controversy in the plenary session today by referencing previous claims allegedly made by Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan against former governor Kayode Fayemi regarding the Ajaokuta steel industry.

Speaking in a media coverage by NASSTV, Sen. Fasuyi claimed that Senator Natasha raised a false alarm that the Ajaokuta Steel has been sold by the then Minister of Mines and Steel, Kayode Fayemi. He suggested that “the character of the petitioner should be carefully examined” before any assessment by the Senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.

Responding swiftly, Senator Akpoti raised a point of order, vehemently denying the accusations. “Mr. Senate President, I feel I’m being judged here,” she declared. “Never did I say these things that have been said about me. Did I accuse Governor Fayemi of harassing me? I will not allow myself to be ridiculed here.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio addressed the harassment allegations directly, offering a personal defense. “I was raised by a single mother and have the highest regards for women,” he stated. Emphasizing his respect for women, Akpabio noted, “Having four beautiful daughters, I respect women generally.” He further highlighted his past achievements, adding that during his tenure as a state governor, he was recognized as one of the most gender-friendly governors in Nigeria.

The session took a procedural turn when Akpabio attempted to refer the petition to the relevant committee. However, fellow senators strongly objected, arguing that the move was not sub-judice but a direct breach of Senate standing rules.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Majority Leader, was particularly vocal in opposing the petition. ”It is against the rules of the Senate to receive a petition signed by a Senator,” he argued, calling for its outright rejection.
