Dr. Funso Awe, the Presiding Archbishop of the Orthodox Anglican Church in Nigeria, has weighed in on reports of Northern leaders being dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu, believing that while some Northern politicians may not be happy with Tinubu, their influence may not be strong enough to challenge him in the 2027 election, during an interview with DAILY INDEPENDENT.

According to Dr. Awe, Nigeria’s political system gives governors significant control in their states.

He explained that unless the Northern Governors unite as a coalition, their dissatisfaction will not have much impact.

He suggested that scattered opposition from individual leaders is unlikely to pose a real threat to Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He stated that political influence in Nigeria often depends on collective action, especially from state governors.

Without their backing, any resistance to Tinubu’s leadership may remain weak.

While the 2027 election is still years away, Tinubu’s position appears stable for now.

“The North may not be happy with Tinubu. But, I cannot see them trying to get anything done about it. The Nigerian political structure is such that in most cases, the governors hold sway about the happenings in their states. If in this case it is the coalition of the Northern Governors that is talking, that is when they will be taken seriously. But, is that is not the case, I do not understand how far they can go. For now, I do not see any opposition against Bola Tinubu in 2027,” he said.
