Maureen Ikeorah, a 53-year-old widow from Ifiteduno in Anambra State, has shared why she was publicly flogged by a Catholic priest. She disclosed that she works as a teacher in a Catholic school, where she teaches primary six pupils. She explained that the incident happened after the priest accused her of calling a meeting, which she denied. She said before she could say much, he (the priest) started flogging her in front of everyone.
Speaking in an interview with Punch, Ikeorah stated that the real issue was that teachers believed the priest had taken their lesson allowance, which led to disagreements between them. She disclosed that despite what happened, her faith remains unshaken. She stated that the Catholic priest is not Jesus Christ, and his actions will not change her belief in Christianity. She said “The Catholic priest is not Jesus Christ; so, his actions will not change my belief in the Christian faith. We don’t worship man; we worship God”
Speaking about her job, she said she has no plans to continue working at the school. She explained that the humiliation was too much, and she does not want to face any further insults. However, she expressed concern for her pupils, who were deeply affected by the incident. She revealed that after hearing about what happened, some of them visited her at home.
