A chieftain of the Labour Party, Anslem Eragbe, has stated that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should not have participated in the 2023 presidential election.
According to a report by Punch, Eragbe, who noted that it was the turn of the South to produce the next president, emphasized that the presidency should remain in southern Nigeria until 2031.
He noted that Atiku, having served as Nigeria’s Vice President for eight years, is well aware of the country’s political arrangements. He said that instead of contesting, Atiku Abubakar should support and mentor younger Nigerians in their pursuit of leadership, particularly in 2027.
When asked whether Atiku would be violating any law by running for the presidency in 2027, Eragbe acknowledged his right to contest but reiterated that the period from 2027 to 2031 should be reserved for a candidate from the South.
“Atiku Abubakar was not supposed to contest the 2023 presidential election because it was the turn of southern Nigeria. It is the turn of the South till 2031,” he said, adding that, “Being a former Vice President of Nigeria for eight years, Atiku Abubakar knows Nigeria’s power drill and equation.”
