Iyanuoluwa Adedeji, the 22-year-old woman accused of stabbing her husband, Jimoh Azeez, to death on December 31, 2024, has spoken out about the tragic incident.
Currently in police detention, she claims she had suffered repeated physical abuse in her marriage and insists her husband’s death was not intentional.
According to Iyanuoluwa, the fatal altercation began when Azeez accused her of infidelity. The argument escalated, and he allegedly picked up a knife in anger.
In the struggle that followed, she said the knife accidentally wounded him. She maintains that the injury was minor but that her husband believed a charm he had used made him vulnerable to harm.
Realizing the severity of the situation, Iyanuoluwa said she rushed Azeez to two different hospitals in an attempt to save his life. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the second facility.
Following the tragic event, Iyanuoluwa voluntarily turned herself in to the police. Authorities have since detained her and are continuing their investigation.
The police have stated that she will be formally charged in court after their inquiry is completed.
The case has sparked conversations about domestic violence and self-defense in Nigeria. Some believe Iyanuoluwa’s account suggests she acted in self-defense, while others argue that she should be held accountable for her husband’s death.
As the legal process unfolds, many will be watching closely to see how the justice system handles the case, particularly in light of the claims of domestic abuse and self-defense.
