Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu has addressed the recent altercation in the Senate chamber, where Senator Natasha Akpoti raised her voice at Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The incident, which sparked reactions among lawmakers and the public, was widely discussed across various platforms.
Speaking in an interview on Channels TV from 0:16, Adaramodu explained that such heated moments are natural in legislative proceedings, as debates often evoke strong emotions. He dismissed concerns that Akpoti’s actions would lead to disciplinary measures, stressing that lawmakers have different ways of expressing their opinions. According to him, the National Assembly is a place of vibrant discussions and not a space for complete silence.
Adaramodu further noted that the issue had already been resolved internally, as senators from Kogi State had tendered an apology on Akpoti’s behalf. He added that the Senate had accepted the apology, and there was no intention to revisit the matter.
“The National Assembly is not a graveyard, so people will raise voices at times. And when we raise voices, we are human beings. The raw materials to lawmaking are human beings, and when it is human beings, we have different people, different approaches to issues. It is not a recompense against the senator because her colleagues from Kogi State had already tendered that apology on her behalf, and the Senate as a whole has already accepted that apology. So, we’re not going to revisit that,” Adaramodu stated.
His remarks come amid ongoing conversations about decorum in the Senate, with some arguing that lawmakers should maintain a high level of professionalism while expressing their views. Others believe that passionate debates are necessary for democracy to thrive.
