The Osun State High Court has nullified the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) victory in the recent governorship election while also declining the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) request to have their candidate declared the winner.
Justice Adekunle Adeyemi, who delivered the judgment, cited electoral inconsistencies as the reason for overturning the results. However, rather than reinstating the APC candidate, the court highlighted the need for fairness and ordered a rerun in affected areas to allow voters to make their choice under improved conditions.
For the PDP, the ruling presents an unexpected challenge, as the party had already begun celebrating its win. A spokesperson expressed disappointment but assured supporters of their commitment to pursuing further legal action. Meanwhile, the APC sees the court’s decision as a second chance to contest the election properly and is rallying its members for the upcoming vote.
This judgment has sparked wider conversations about Nigeria’s election processes, with experts calling for improvements to reduce post-election legal disputes. As Osun State prepares for another round of voting, ensuring a transparent and credible election remains a top priority.
