Former Commissioner for Works in Osun State, Remi Omowaiye, has called for the cancellation of the local government election scheduled for Saturday, 22nd February 2025.
In an interview with Arise TV from 11:30, he argued that the state already has duly elected local government chairmen, meaning there are no vacant positions to justify the election.
While drawing a comparison, he questioned whether INEC could suddenly decide to conduct a presidential election while a validly elected president is in office.
He maintained that since Osun State already has elected council chairmen and councillors, the election is unnecessary. Omowaiye further stated that proceeding with the election would amount to a waste of public funds.
He stated that there are no vacant positions, as the council chairmen are fully prepared to resume their duties. He emphasized that their return would ensure the reinstatement of local government teachers and health workers who were dismissed by Governor Adeleke.
He said, “There’s no vacancy. We have validly elected council members so, there cannot be election. Are you going to say INEC will wake up tomorrow and say they want to do presidential election in Nigeria? No, there’s a validly elected president in Nigeria. There are validly elected council chairmen and councilors in Osun, so elections cannot hold.
“If they go ahead to do the election, they just want to waste the money of Nigerians. There’s no vacancy, the council chairmen are coming fully to resume and ensure that the local government teachers that were sacked by Adeleke will be reinstated. The health workers sacked by Adeleke will be reinstated by the local government chairmen.”
