Former Nigerian lawmaker and activist, Senator Shehu Sani, has reacted to Saudi Arabia’s recent donation of 100 tonnes of date fruits to Nigeria.
In a statement posted on his verified Twitter account, Sani expressed appreciation for the gesture but also highlighted the contrast between Saudi Arabia’s massive investment in the United States and its humanitarian aid to Nigeria.
“The Saudis recently invested $600 billion in the US and now donated 100 tonnes of Date fruits to us in Nigeria. As Africans, we are taught to appreciate every good done to us, we appreciate the sweet Dates,” Sani wrote.
His remark comes amid ongoing discussions about the economic and diplomatic priorities of wealthy nations in their dealings with Africa. Saudi Arabia, a key player in global oil and finance, has been deepening its economic ties with Western nations while also engaging in humanitarian efforts in developing countries, including Nigeria.
Sani’s statement appears to acknowledge the donation while subtly pointing out the disparity between Saudi Arabia’s investments in the US and its charitable contributions to Africa. The $600 billion investment in the United States, which he referenced, reflects Saudi Arabia’s economic and strategic interests in global markets, whereas the donation of dates symbolizes its softer diplomatic approach towards Nigeria.
