Former Nigerian Air Force Spokesman Captain Sadeeq Shehu has dismissed widespread conspiracy theories about Boko Haram’s sponsorship, emphasizing the lack of concrete evidence behind popular claims.
In a Channels TV interview, Shehu traced the evolution of these theories over the past decade and a half. “Unfortunately, since this Boko Haram incident started about 15 to 16 years, there has been so many conspiracy theories, and I will not be flippant to mention names,” he said.
Shehu outlined several debunked theories: “The initial information was that Boko Haram was being sponsored by a former governor of Borno State. And we left that theory; later on, there was a theory that it is France, and at that time, we were not even chummy with France because of the geopolitical area.”
He also added that many viral videos that seems to indict foreigners for being responsible for Boko Haram’s funding all turned out to be fake: “After that, we started getting video clips of a white man seen dropping weapons. Whenever there are such incidents, as in my own personal capacity, I follow those things to the end, and I still stand as of today that it is not true.”
Meanwhile, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa has reported a new development: captured Boko Haram terrorists have been found carrying foreign currencies. The military has alerted both the United Nations and European Union to investigate the source of these funds.
