Elder statesman Prof. Yusufu Turaki explained why, in his view, deploying US troops to Nigeria would not stop the killings in the North.
In an interview with THE SUN on Saturday, 4 April 2026, Turaki said many expected foreign troops to reduce violence in the north, but the situation has instead worsened. He argued that the primary cause of insecurity in the region is the way Sharia has been interpreted and applied, and that Nigerians have avoided confronting the issue.
Turaki maintained that extremist or distorted applications of Sharia have taken root in a country that is not officially Islamic, and he warned that peace and national unity will remain elusive while Sharia in its current form continues to be practiced.
