Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor and producer Afeez Owo has opened up about one of the most challenging moments in his career.
In an interview on Kunle Afod’s official YouTube channel, Owo recounted how financial struggles and rejection pushed him to a breaking point, leading to a near-fatal accident.
According to Owo, the incident happened in 1999 when he was producing a movie. The production had reached a critical stage when he ran out of funds to pay actors and crew members.
Desperate to keep the project going, he went to Idumota, Lagos, to meet with some marketers for financial support. However, his hopes were shattered when three different marketers rejected him in one day.
“The worst part was that I didn’t even have money on me to return to the film location,” he said. With no other option, he began trekking from Idumota to Ojuelegba, completely lost in thought.
Owo explained that the weight of his struggles consumed him, and without realizing it, he had wandered onto a busy express road. “I was deep in thought, thinking about my life and the future of my career. Before I knew it, I started walking on the express road,” he recalled.
It wasn’t long before the inevitable happened. “Suddenly, I heard a loud bang. Before I could understand what had happened, a car had hit me,” Owo narrated. The driver of the car and people around rushed toward him, eager to help. Many suggested taking him to the hospital, but he refused.
“I asked them, ‘If you take me to the hospital, do you have money to pay for my treatment?’” he said. He was overwhelmed by financial struggles and could not imagine adding medical bills to his problems.
Just when things seemed hopeless, a kind stranger stepped forward and offered him assistance. That moment became a turning point in his life.
“As God would have it, I found a helper who supported me. And that same movie, the one that caused me so much pain, later became the film that brought me to the limelight,” he said.
