A recent report by Vanguard has provided new details about the arrest of a suspect linked to the death of Hon. Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly. The lawmaker was abducted on December 24, 2024, in Onitsha, and his remains were discovered weeks later. The suspect, identified as Ikem, reportedly revealed during interrogation that their group was not hired to kidnap Azuka.

According to Ikem, the abduction occurred spontaneously when the lawmaker unknowingly ran into the gang while they were engaged in another criminal operation. Seizing the opportunity, they decided to take him hostage. His confession contradicts earlier speculations that the kidnapping was politically motivated or orchestrated by external forces.

In his remarks, “We were not contracted by anybody to kidnap Azuka. He just ran into us while we were in an operation and we decided to abducted him”.

The gang, known for its criminal activities in Anambra State, had been operating for a long time without significant resistance from authorities. Reports indicate that they used proceeds from their crimes to fund a lavish lifestyle in Asaba, Delta State. The suspects allegedly spent their earnings on luxury cars, expensive properties, and extravagant living.

Security operatives eventually tracked down and arrested the suspects, marking a major breakthrough in efforts to curb violent crime in the region. Their arrest followed a coordinated operation by security forces, who had been monitoring their movements. The capture of Ikem and his gang members is expected to provide more insight into their past activities and potential accomplices.

Authorities have vowed to ensure that justice is served for the late lawmaker. The case has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for stricter measures to combat the rising incidents of abductions and killings in Anambra and neighboring states. The gruesome nature of the crime has heightened public demand for improved security and stronger law enforcement responses.
