The Oyo State House of Assembly strongly condemned alleged derogatory remarks made against the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, by Dr. Doyin Odebowale, a former senior aide to the late Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
According to report from Vanguard, the lawmakers expressed their disapproval of the comments, which were reportedly made on Lagelu FM, Ibadan, describing them as misleading, disrespectful, and inflammatory. The issue was brought to the assembly through a motion sponsored by the Majority Leader, Mr. Sanjo Adedoyin (Ogbomoso South-PDP), and received unanimous support. The legislators emphasized the need to protect the dignity of traditional rulers in Oyo State, recognizing their essential role in preserving cultural values, heritage, and community unity.
The assembly noted that Odebowale’s remarks violated the Nigeria Broadcasting Code of Ethics and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Act. They urged the state government to take necessary steps to shield traditional institutions from such attacks. Additionally, they called on the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to take legal action against Odebowale.
Lagelu FM and its presenter, Temitayo Oyeladun, known as ‘Aboo Oro,’ were also criticized for failing to uphold professional broadcasting ethics during the program. The assembly requested the Ministry of Information and Orientation to collaborate with NBC to enforce disciplinary measures against the station.
To rectify the situation, the lawmakers demanded a public apology from Lagelu FM and a retraction of the controversial statements. They reaffirmed their commitment to respecting cultural custodians while ensuring that media organizations adhere to ethical and legal standards in their operations.
