The National Legal Adviser of the Labour Party, Kehinde Edu, has stated that Peter Obi would be a better choice for the party in the 2027 presidential election provided he acknowledges the party’s authority.
During an interview with Arise TV from 20:30, Edu emphasized that Obi must be willing to participate in a fair and competitive selection process alongside other aspirants.
Kehinde Edu also stressed the importance of internal democracy within the party. He argued that selecting a candidate without open competition would not be beneficial for either the party or the eventual candidate. According to him, imposing a candidate without allowing others to contest would undermine the party’s democratic principles.
Edu further reflected on the 2023 general election, arguing that while multiple aspirants purchased nomination forms for the primaries, many chose to step down, leading to a consensus. He noted that the party aims to improve its internal processes to ensure fairness in future elections.
He said, “Obi will be a better presidential candidate if he subjects himself to the supremacy of the party, and engage in a fair competition with anybody who wants to be a candidate. In a situation where you say you handpicked somebody, that’s the candidate, and everybody should keep quiet, I think it’s not good enough.
“It’s not good enough for the party, it’s not good enough for the candidate that will emerge at the end of the day. So, we are trying to make things better. Even in the 2023 general election, at the primaries, we did not say nobody should contest, there are many people who bought forms, but many of them agreed to step down. So, there was a consensus.”
