According to Nigerian Tribune, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has strongly condemned statements made by former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transport, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. The group has made it clear that the Igbo community will not support any coalition attempting to undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to Ohanaeze, Amaechi’s statements at an opposition leaders’ conference in Abuja were not only reckless but also dangerous. The former minister allegedly called for Nigerians to use “brutal force” to seize power from President Tinubu by 2027, a remark that has raised serious concerns about political stability.

Even more alarming was his assertion that Nigerian  politicians must be willing and ready to “steal, maim, and kill” to retain power.

Ohanaeze has strongly denounced these comments, warning that such rhetoric has the potential to incite violence, destabilize the country, and mislead Nigerian youth into dangerous actions.

Reacting to Amaechi’s statements, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, emphasized that his remarks were an affront to democracy and peace.

“Amaechi’s equally disconcerting assertion that politicians must be willing to ‘steal, maim, and kill’ to retain power not only diminishes the dignity of our political discourse but also poses a dire threat to the very fabric of our society.”

Ohanaeze warned that such inflammatory speech could plunge Nigeria into chaos, adding that it is unacceptable for any politician—especially one of Igbo heritage—to make such divisive statements. The group further stressed that it was imperative to publicly disassociate Ndigbo from such reckless rhetoric, ensuring that no one mistakes these sentiments as representative of the Igbo people.

The socio-cultural body did not stop at condemning Amaechi’s remarks; it also took a firm stand against any political maneuvering designed to challenge the legitimacy of President Tinubu’s administration.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the reckless and incendiary comments made by Chibuike Amaechi against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is essential to declare firmly that the Ndigbo will never endorse any political conspiracy aimed at undermining the legitimacy of an elected President.”

Backing the call made by Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, Ohanaeze urged Amaechi to retract his remarks and stop inciting unrest. The group warned that no individual, no matter how influential, is above the law, and any attempts to disrupt the peace of the nation must be met with decisive consequences.

Mazi Isiguzoro went on to state that the current coalition of opposition leaders is weak and disorganized, making it incapable of mounting a serious challenge against President Tinubu in 2027. According to him, rather than engaging in reckless rhetoric, the opposition should focus on democratic and constructive political engagement.

In a show of solidarity, Ohanaeze Ndigbo declared its commitment to rallying Igbos across Nigeria—especially those residing in the North—behind President Tinubu.

“In this context, Ohanaeze Ndigbo unequivocally announces its intent to mobilize and galvanize the Igbo population residing in the nineteen Northern States to stand firmly alongside Dr. Bello Matawalle. Together, we shall ensure that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not only maintains his office but secures a resounding victory in the forthcoming elections.”

The Igbo group also called on the Federal Government and security agencies to closely monitor political actors who may seek to use discontent as a weapon to destabilize Nigeria. It urged authorities to enforce severe penalties on any individuals or groups attempting to incite violence, emphasizing that national security must take precedence over political ambitions.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo concluded its statement by reaffirming its allegiance to President Tinubu and the democratic process. The group stressed that it remains committed to peace, stability, and effective governance—principles that align with the aspirations of the Igbo people.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterates its unwavering allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We clearly state that there shall be no support from the Igbo for any coalition of opposition leaders plotting against the sitting President.”
