Veteran Nollywood actor and legal practitioner Kenneth Okonkwo has expressed condolences for the recent Niger State tragedy.
“Let me use this opportunity to commiserate with all the victims and families of the bereaved in the tanker explosion that happened in Niger State. It was very unfortunate, and it’s still very regrettable,” Okonkwo stated during a Symfoni TV interview, noting that “About 98 persons have been confirmed dead.”
The actor-lawyer criticized the official response, stating, “The response of government to this tanker explosion actually typifies the level of insensitivity of our leaders to the plight of the people and their response to natural disasters.”
Okonkwo contrasted this with international leadership responses to crises. “Joe Biden was to visit Italy as the last country before departing office, and because of the fire in California, he canceled the visit,” he noted. He added, “The mayor of Los Angeles attended the swearing-in ceremony of the president of Ghana. Immediately she learned of the fire incident in California, she rushed back.”
In a lighter moment, Okonkwo expressed personal displeasure about one aspect of the California fires: “I must say that I’m still going to take it up with the United States government because they named one of the fires Kenneth. That is unacceptable to me. Next time, when they have a natural disaster, they shouldn’t name it Kenneth.”
