A legal expert has shed light on the complex political maneuvering that preceded the Rivers State Assembly crisis. During an interview on Arise TV from 6:46, lawyer and public affairs analyst Sogbeye Eli detailed how lawmakers had apparently planned their defection well in advance of their actual party switch.
Eli pointed out that the legislators’ legal actions in late 2023 revealed their premeditated intentions. “Remember, they first went to court on the 29th of November 2023, before they defected on the 11th of December, to seek reliefs—one of which was that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not conduct elections, and two, that the National Assembly should not take over the functions of the Rivers State Assembly,” he explained.
The analyst emphasized the calculated nature of these moves, stating, “They had already agreed that they would defect before they filed that suit in November of 2023, before they eventually defected on December 11.”
Addressing the current situation, Eli criticized attempts by some lawmakers to reverse course. “When you now see the consequences of your action coming back at you, you want to run back? It doesn’t work that way,” he noted.
Eli also referenced recent judicial developments, stating, “That’s why the same Justice Omotosho, whom they relied on in that judgment in January of 2024, had backed off.” He concluded by asserting, “These are the issues. They are straightforward. There are no complications.”
