The governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has refuted allegations that their earlier objections to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills were politically motivated or intended as an attack on the president.

Speaking during an interview with Channels TV from 9:09, he explained that the concerns raised were intended to safeguard the presidency and ensure public welfare.

He made this known after the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) expressed support for the proposed tax reform bills currently under consideration at the National Assembly. In a statement on Thursday, the forum recommended a fair and equitable distribution formula for value-added tax (VAT).

Speaking further, Governor Sule emphasized that those who identified and addressed weaknesses in the bills, have genuine concern for the success of Bola Tinubu as president. He argued that failing to address the economic burden these reforms might place on citizens could lead to public discontent, which would ultimately reflect poorly on the presidency. He said those raising these concerns, do so out of loyalty and a desire to protect the reputation of the administration.

He said, “This debate that was put forward is for the protection of even the presidency. If ordinary people begin to feel heavy punch about the economic situation, the president will look bad. Some of us who have identified these weaknesses, brought them up, and discussing them, are people who truly love the president. If you don’t love the president, you will say let it go. The moment the common man is hit with some of these things, the common man will turn around and hate the president for that.”
