In a significant interview on Channels TV from 15:38, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Segun Showunmi has raised concerns about the erosion of traditional African values in Nigeria’s political sphere, specifically addressing the treatment of elder statesmen and the importance of cultural respect in political discourse.

Showunmi expressed particular dismay over what he perceives as diminishing respect for political veterans, specifically referencing former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili’s position in current political dynamics. “You can’t sit in a nation where the likes of Odili now must begin to appear little because of somebody that is much younger than them,” he stated emphatically during the interview.

The PDP leader emphasized the importance of maintaining African cultural values even while adopting modern political practices. “We are Africans; we have our own culture. However much we are copying Europeans, there are still some lines that you don’t want to cross,” he explained, highlighting the delicate balance between modernization and cultural preservation.

Showunmi particularly criticized what he sees as a breakdown in traditional respect structures within political circles. “You don’t want to allow a younger person to be overly rude and calling out leaders that are older,” he asserted, expressing concern about the changing dynamics of political discourse.

Addressing the specific situation with former Governor Nyesom Wike, Showunmi suggested that President Tinubu should take a more decisive stance. “And unfortunately, he has Wike on his side now,” he noted, adding, “It’s for him to say, ‘Oh, Wike, I’ve come to a point where you need to come to APC if you want to be in government. Go back to your party,’ or whatever.”

The interview highlights growing concerns about the need to maintain cultural respect while engaging in political discourse, particularly regarding the relationship between younger and older political figures.
