Chief Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has lamented the devastating impact of Nigeria’s economic crisis on citizens, in an interview from 18:51 recounting the tragic story of a friend whose life was upended by the collapse of Heritage Bank.
“The economic situation of Nigeria is tragic, absolutely tragic,” George said. “I have a wealthy friend who, for years, has been a successful businessman. He invested heavily in a number of financial institutions. One of them was Heritage Bank, which collapsed recently. He had millions tied up there. All his savings, his investments, everything he had worked for, was lost overnight when the bank fell. It was a major blow to him.”
He revealed the aftermath of the financial loss, saying, “This man, after that event, had a massive stroke. You cannot imagine the kind of pain he went through. He had no money to even feed himself. How do you go from being wealthy to being penniless and unable to support yourself or your family? It’s a nightmare.”
George used the story to highlight the human toll of Nigeria’s economic decline, calling for urgent reforms to stabilize the financial system and prevent such tragedies from recurring.
