Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has criticized northern leaders for their inability to develop the region, as reported by DAILY POST.
He made this statement during a town hall meeting for Christian leaders in northern Nigeria.
Dogara highlighted that northern leaders held power for over 40 years but failed to bring important progress and argued that their lack of investment in meaningful projects has left the North impoverished and underdeveloped.
The event, titled Church and Society: Tax Reforms and Matters Arising, focused on governance and development in the region.
Dogara used the opportunity to call for accountability and reflection on leadership within the North.
He dismissed claims that the South or President Bola Tinubu is responsible for the challenges faced by the region and stated that blaming other regions is unproductive and misleading.
Dogara also addressed concerns about appointments under Tinubu’s administration favoring Yoruba individuals.
He urged northerners to reflect on the actions of their own leaders during their time in power and questioned what was achieved during the decades of northern dominance in leadership, noting that the region remains impoverished due to its leaders’ decisions.
He underlined the importance of northern leaders taking responsibility for the region’s current state and working toward meaningful development.
“We are all northerners, and it should be made clear that President Tinubu or the South is not our problem; they have not come to cheat the North.”
“That is out of the question. Some are claiming that Yoruba people are getting appointments, but let’s reflect.”
“We ruled this country for over 40 years when northerners were in power. What did we achieve? The North remains the same, impoverished by our own leaders,” Dogara said…V¡ew-Morë
