The Senate has told Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to pause the demolition of buildings unless there is a court order authorizing it.
They formed an eight-member committee led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin. This committee will investigate the demolitions that have happened since Wike took office.
This decision according to Arise TV came after a motion was brought up by Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the FCT. In her motion, she pointed out that the demolitions have not followed legal court processes, which is a concern.
Kingibe also noted that many people are suffering because the demolitions have left them homeless. She mentioned a specific case involving an estate owned by a late colonel, Paul Osa Ogbebor, which was recently taken away.
Kingibe requested that the Senate force Wike’s administration to stop these demolitions and also halt the revocation of the colonel’s estate.
Senator Natasha Apoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, supported Kingibe’s motion. She urged the Senate to direct Wike to stop demolishing buildings in the FCT and to set up a committee to look into the situation more closely.
