In a revealing interview with Arise TV from 4:43, a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees has launched a scathing critique of the party’s internal democratic processes, raising serious questions about its commitment to its founding principles.
Inna Ciroma, a prominent BoT member, delivered a pointed assessment of the party’s current state, arguing that the PDP has strayed far from its original democratic vision. “In the PDP of today, we are not practicing democracy as it should be practiced,” Ciroma stated emphatically.
Highlighting the disconnect between the party’s name and its actual practices, Ciroma drew attention to the party’s very identity. “Because the name of the party is called People’s Democratic Party, which means it belongs to the people, and it is democratic,” she explained. She further emphasized the stark contradiction by referencing the party’s own logo, which proclaims “Power belongs to the people.”
“Our logo says, ‘Power belongs to the people,’ but as of now, does power belong to the people in the PDP? No,” Ciroma challenged, casting doubt on the party’s internal governance.
The board member expressed significant concern about the party’s executive leadership, asserting that they have failed in their fundamental responsibility. “We have the executive, and this executive is supposed to supervise the democratic process in the party, but they are not doing it,” she said.
Ciroma warned that these internal challenges extend beyond the party’s immediate membership, potentially impacting the broader national political landscape. “So, everybody is concerned, and it is affecting our politics nationally. Because in a democratic situation, you have the ruling government, and you must have a strong opposition party,” she concluded.
The criticism highlights growing tensions within the PDP and raises critical questions about the party’s future direction and commitment to democratic principles.
