According to a report by The Guardian Nigeria on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Despite widespread belief to the contrary, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has said that Fulani herdsmen are not responsible for the majority of the violent crimes and deaths in southeastern Nigeria.

While speaking to Anambra people in diaspora at a town hall gathering at the Metro Points Hotel in New Carrollton, Maryland, USA, Governor Soludo made this claim. He continues to engage with Ndi Anambra who live overseas, and this interactive session was just one more element of that.

The bulk of the armed criminals and kidnappers arrested in Anambra State since Soludo took office are of Igbo origin, the governor said in a frank evaluation of the state’s security situation.

“Since I assumed office over three years ago, 99.99 percent of those arrested for kidnapping, extortion, and other violent crimes in the state are Igbos,” said the governor. The abduction and murder of fellow Igbos is being perpetrated by our own people. We must stop attributing problems on Fulani herdsmen. We need to own up to our mistakes.

He stressed that the Igbo people need to have open dialogue about the reasons for regional instability and how some people are taking advantage of the situation for their own gain. Claiming to be fighting for the emancipation of the Southeast, Soludo attacked parties that he claimed were more interested in financial gain than genuine ideology.

“Enough with the pretence. Support is coming from the locals for these so-called liberators who are wreaking havoc in the woods.

You have to wonder: who is providing their food? How can they find a safe haven? Who is providing them with this information?” he enquired.

He went on to say that under the guise of political or ethnic opposition, many of these so-called agitators have made a killing while wreaking havoc on the very communities they say they are fighting for.

Furthermore, the governor emphasised once again that the development of Anambra State is a common responsibility and that the state is owned by all indigenes. In order to restore peace and order, we must all do our part. Criminal gangs posing as freedom fighters will not be able to control or terrorise our communities.

To end, Governor Soludo urged Ndi Anambra both at home and abroad to stand in solidarity with initiatives for long-term peace and economic prosperity, while also urging traditional institutions, youth organisations, and community leaders to denounce crime and violence in all its manifestations.
