In an exclusive interview with TVC News, Police Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, addressed the Senate Committee’s claims regarding the alleged missing 3,997 firearms, calling the report inaccurate. Adejobi clarified that while the police have acknowledged the loss of some firearms, these were primarily due to attacks on officers during confrontations with criminals.

He explained that during such attacks, some officers were killed and their firearms stolen. However, Adejobi emphasized that this loss should not be interpreted as 3,997 firearms being missing. “Don’t forget that we agree that we are having some missing firearms that we lost due to attacks on our men. Some of our men have been killed at the battlefield, their firearms carted away,” he stated.

“The report is not accurate that they are saying we have missing 3,997 firearms,” Adejobi continued. “The Inspector General of Police is not saying the police have lost 3,997 firearms; they said unaccounted for.”

Adejobi further explained that the exact number of missing firearms is still under investigation. He stressed that the figure being cited by the Senate Committee was not an official statement. “I will need to consider not conclusion and have a particular figure,” he added.

The statement comes amid growing concerns over the safety and accountability of police arms in the country. Adejobi reassured the public that the police are working diligently to recover the unaccounted-for firearms and ensure the safety of citizens.
