In an interview with Arise News, ARISE Analyst Mahmud Jega shed light on the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, suggesting that the State House of Assembly is not only working to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara but is also targeting the Chief Judge.
With 27 out of 35 lawmakers reportedly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, the Assembly has the numbers to remove the governor. However, Jega pointed out that the final hurdle in the impeachment process is the Chief Judge, who is responsible for setting up a panel to investigate any allegations against the governor. If the panel clears Fubara, the impeachment process would be permanently halted within the current Assembly.
Fearing that the Chief Judge may not do their bidding by ensuring a guilty verdict against the governor, the Assembly has now turned its focus on removing the Chief Judge as well. Jega revealed that the lawmakers have initiated an investigation into allegations of age falsification against the Chief Judge, a move he described as a calculated attempt to eliminate any legal obstacles standing in their way. The situation, he noted, reflects a deeper power struggle that is not just about governance but a fierce battle for political control.
“They said yesterday that they are initiating investigation into allegations of age falsification on the part of the Chief Judge. What I can see is that they suspect that the Chief Judge may not do their bidding and set up a panel that will definitely return a guilty verdict. So they also want to do away with the Chief Judge of Rivers State. It’s a nasty political maneuver,” Jega stated.
