According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, August 14, 2025, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has dismissed the possibility of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, securing a presidential or vice-presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Bwala made this assertion during an interview aired on Channels Television on Wednesday, where he also cast doubt on Obi’s political relevance within the emerging opposition alliance.
According to Bwala, Peter Obi’s chances of becoming a flagbearer for any political party—including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has recently gained attention as a possible platform for an opposition coalition—are now slim.
He further claimed that even the vice-presidential slot may be out of reach for the former Anambra State governor, citing ongoing political realignments and shifting public sentiment.
Bwala argued that Obi’s influence has significantly declined since the 2023 election, stating that the votes he received at the time have now diminished by 50 percent.
He attributed this drop to what he described as a lack of substance in Obi’s campaign, claiming it was driven more by emotional appeal and political rhetoric than by a coherent national agenda.
Bwala said, “He is not going to get a ticket in any of the parties. That is Peter Obi. The problem now is that he might not get the vice presidential ticket from the way things are going. Whether Peter Obi is a ticket bearer of the party, he has lost his 50 percent of votes because they were not votes built on agenda and politics, but they were built on rhetoric and division.”
According to him, Nigerian voters are now more discerning and less likely to be swayed by sentiment.
The comments come just weeks after a number of prominent opposition figures—including Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—endorsed the ADC as a potential platform for a united front to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
However, Bwala dismissed the impact of such efforts, asserting that President Tinubu remains firmly positioned to win a second term.
He reiterated earlier projections that Tinubu would secure as many as two million votes from the South-East region in 2027, a zone where the President had previously underperformed but is now expected to gain traction due to renewed political outreach and shifting alliances.
